{"id":23,"date":"2012-10-09T06:23:47","date_gmt":"2012-10-09T06:23:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prelingerlibrary.org\/home\/?page_id=23"},"modified":"2016-09-22T03:50:39","modified_gmt":"2016-09-22T03:50:39","slug":"faq","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/prelingerlibrary.org\/home\/contact\/faq\/","title":{"rendered":"FAQ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Megan and Rick Prelinger<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where did the books come from?<\/strong><br \/>\nThey were collected from used bookstores, new\u00a0bookstores, junk stores, private book dealers, library\u00a0discards and library duplicate exchange lists; also\u00a0from donations offered to us by library visitors and\u00a0other generous like-minded people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How are the books chosen?<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is our personal collection, based on our research\u00a0interests. It is also designed to support the projects of\u00a0others; to stimulate discovery of the unexpected, and\u00a0to work as a visual history, social history, and history\u00a0of ideas of the 20th century in America. Each\u00a0acquisition must make a direct contribution to this\u00a0goal. We are very selective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Does the library still take in new material, or\u00a0is it full?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe library project is never static. Like a long-cooking\u00a0pot of stew, it continuously takes in new ingredients\u00a0while also reducing down, becoming richer and more\u00a0concentrated with time.\u00a0They were collected from used bookstores, new\u00a0bookstores, junk stores, private book dealers, library\u00a0discards and library duplicate exchange lists; also\u00a0from donations offered to us by library visitors and\u00a0other generous like-minded people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the access policy?<\/strong><br \/>\nDuring open hours the library is open to the public\u00a0without charge. The library is an appropriation-friendly\u00a0workshop where visitors are invited to scan, to copy,\u00a0to photograph, and to download digitized books from\u00a0our collection at the Internet Archive. There are no\u00a0access fees. However, materials cannot be physically\u00a0removed from the library.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the library\u2019s open hours?<\/strong><br \/>\nWe are open a minimum of one day a week, currently\u00a0Wednesdays, 1 p.m. &#8211; 8 p.m.\u00a0We also offer limited off-hours research appointments\u00a0for traveling visitors who are unable to utilize the\u00a0regularly scheduled open hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is the library a nonprofit?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe library is a free offering, an installation, a\u00a0workshop, and an extension of our living room. Although not incorporated officially , the library is is a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/theintersection.org\/programs\/intersection-incubator\/\" title=\"Intersection Incubatator\" target=\"_blank\">Intersection Incubator<\/a>, a program of <a href=\"http:\/\/theintersection.org\" title=\"Intersection for the Arts\" target=\"_blank\">Intersection for the Arts<\/a>\u00a0providing fiscal sponsorship, incubation and consulting to artists. \u00a0Our annual budget is $28,000 per year.\u00a0\u00a0In 2012 we were approximately 25% grant- and donor-supported.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How is the library supported?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe library is sponsored in part by individual donors through Intersection for the Arts. To donate, please visit our <a href=\"https:\/\/prelingerlibrary.org\/home\/support\/\" title=\"Support\">support page<\/a>. We are also supported in part by grants from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/krfoundation.org\" title=\"Kenneth Rainin Foundation\" target=\"_blank\">Kenneth Rainin Foundation<\/a>\u00a0and the Haas Foundation. We are otherwise supported by the founders\u2019 earned income. We gratefully acknowledge cash contributions for acquisitions and operations from Kenneth N.
