The Library is an urban oasis of research, community, art, and collaboration in San Francisco. It is a freely publicly accessible workshop where artists, writers, and activists from around the Bay and across the world meet to read, research and make new works of all kinds. Within its social function as a public workshop, the Library hosts ongoing experiments in the future of reading, research and collaboration. No less important than what’s in the collection is how it’s used: through social reading, appropriation, and collaborations that arise from both careful planning and accidental meetings alike.<\/p>\n
In 2016, the Library\u2019s core community collaborated to host over a hundred public open days and over 1,200 research visits \u2014 all on a budget of about $42,000, most of which was the rent on the Library space. Thanks to the fantastic response to last year\u2019s appeal, 100% of our budget was covered by 120 individual supporters and a handful of major grants, including an anonymous gift of $15,000, a grant from the Seed Fund, and a gift from Mandrake. These 2016 supporters (including many of you) made this our busiest and most productive year ever. <\/p>\n

We could nearly fill another Yearbook with the art-making, public events, research discoveries, and collaborations that have already happened so far this year. <\/p>\n
Your tax-deductible donation benefits every visitor. The Library\u2019s 2017 \u2013 18 budget is $44,548 (details below). We have already been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Seed Fund for 2017 and gathered about $2,500 in individual donations. For the \u201917\u2013’18 fiscal year starting October 1, we seek to raise the rest of this budget.<\/p>\n

All new supporters will receive a bound copy of the 2016 Library Yearbook, and next year a copy of the 2017 Yearbook. Supporters who carry over from last year who should already have a 2016 Yearbook won\u2019t get a duplicate unless it is asked for. Please let us know if you donated in 2016 and have not yet received a Yearbook \u2014 we\u2019ll rush one out to you.<\/p>\n
We recognize that not all of you will be in a position to make a monetary donation. But we are no less grateful for your engagement in whatever form it may take.<\/p>\n
